Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria
A pleasant, “large” Bulgarian city in the mountains, with gorges and chasms separating the different quarters of the city.
After leaving Sophia, I’ve come to Veliko Turnovo, a really magnificent little place. But much of Bulgaria seems to be beautiful, tucked in the back corner of Europe (and eigth grade social studies’ memories). I’ve thrown out the plans to go through Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, and will instead go through Romania and Hungary into Slovenia. Why? I’m not exactly sure, but the reports on Budapest lure me there. Of course, I feel the same way about Bosnia….
